Triathlon clinic Sat Mar 23rd

Hello Parents,

If you are in town and can make it we would love to see you at the school on Saturday March 23rd at 4:30.  We will be allowing the kids the opportunity to bike ride.  You can park in the bus loop and then walk over with the bike to the main parking lot area to have them practice.  We will go over a few things about transition and the race but mostly this gives the kids a chance to bike ride in an open area with out worrying about cars.

We now have this website with lots of helpful links and information.  Please think about sharing the information with friends so if they have kids that want to join they can find out more about it in one location that represents Greenland Pines.   There is still time to register but anyone interested should do so soon.

If you have questions let me know.

Keep encouraging and keep practicing :)

First Clinic Dates Announced for the Reading Racers

Saturday March 23rd 4:30 - 6 and Saturday April 6th 6-7:30 we will meet at the school.

We can park in the bus loop and then walk over to the main parking lot.  Every child should bring their bike and helmet.  The gate will remain locked so there will be no chance of cars pulling into the parking lot while the kids are practicing.  The evening times will help try to avoid the crunch on Saturday morning sports activities and hopefully cooler weather.

Sunday April 21st at 2pm we will meet at Cecil Aquatic Center to work on swimming the lanes. It costs a $1 per person to get in the facility.  You can go to their website to check out the hours to go anytime you would like if your child needs extra time in the pool.

They also have lifeguard training going on at Cecil during Spring Break through out the day but if anyone is interested in meeting down there any day between 6:45 -8pm M, T, W or R.

Please make sure you are telling your friends they can still register and join the team.  They are not required to attend Greenland Pines or are they required to attend any of our group practices.  As we get closer to the date we will try and get another meeting organized so the kids can get together to encourage one another and we can make posters of encouragement for them.  If anyone would like to be in charge of organizing it let us know.

If you have signed up and have not let Jenelle Dunathan know, please remind your child to swing by the library and let her know. Or shoot us a post on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/greenlandpinespta and let us know.

Greenland Pines Reading Racer Kick Off

We're very excited that Greenland Pines will be sending a team of students to this years First Coast Kids Triathlon.

This year's race will take place on May 4 on the campus of JU.

The triathlon consists of 4 components – swimming, biking, running and transitions. At the First Coast Kids Triathlon, kids will only race against other kids in their same age group. They will utilize a time trial start in the JU pool meaning each racer will enter the pool one at a time. As they complete their swim, they will enter the transition area to begin the bike portion of the race. After completing their ride, they will reenter transition, drop-off their bike and exit onto the run course. The run is the final portion of the race. Computerized timing chips are used to track each participant throughout each part of the race. Below are the actual race distances for each of the age groups.

What are the actual race distances?

For Juniors ages 6-10:  Swim is 100 yards, Bike is 3 miles, and the Run is 1/2 mile
For Seniors ages 11-15: Swim is 200 yards, Bike is 6 miles, and the run is 1 mile

Your level is determined by your age on 12/31/2013 so if a child will turn 11 in 2013 they will compete at the Senior level. The minimum race age is 6, the child must be 6 years old by the end of 2013.

Why is Greenland Pines sponsoring a team?

  • This is an opportunity for fitness but also for fundraising for PTA as we are currently experiencing budget shortfall. Last year Loretto's Team Wisdom took over 130 kids to the race raising over $1300 for their school.GPE will receive $10 per child  (of the $35 registration fee) that registers with our team thru First Coast Kids Triathlon
  •
  • The child does not have to be a student at GPE to register with our team - any child can register to participate and list Greenland Pines Reading Racers as their team so if you know someone who attends another school not bringing a team, but would like to race, please encourage them to register with us.Everyone should encourage friends to join.  The more that register with our team the more benefit GPE PTA will get to help the budget.
  •
  • We will offer email encouragement and information through out the months and a few clinics for assistance.  Attendance at the clinics is optional.
